Finding a lubricant that can take the heat, while balancing price and performance across bearings, valves, seals and other applications, may seem difficult.

Common hydrocarbon-based lubricants rapidly break down and fail above 99 °C (210 °F), as well as become too viscous below -18 °C (0 °F). In a temperature limits assessment, Krytox™ PFPE lubricants consistently performed at high and low temperatures, between -75 °C to greater than 400 °C (-103 °F to 752 °F), depending upon operating conditions and product grade (see comparison below).*^/krytoxcomparison.png~left~100~See the difference for yourself.* In a side-by-side temperature test, hydrocarbon and PFPE (Krytox™ GPL 227) greases were placed in an oven at 232 °C (450 °F) for 40 hours. The hydrocarbon grease lost 40 percent of its weight (ceasing to be an effective lubricant) and developed tar. Krytox™, the PFPE grease, remained unchanged in weight, appearance and lubricating ability (see comparison above).
