TEST*Faced with rising underhood temperatures and harsher demands, automotive lubricants can degrade, resulting in component failures and costly warranty claims. *PFPE lubricants, like Krytox™ lubricants, can outperform and outlast traditional lubricants, despite harsh environmental conditions. PFPE lubes also offer a marketing advantage—extended operating lifespan translates to extended warranty opportunities. *Lasting PFPE Lubricant Performance *In an endurance test (ASTM D-3336), which evaluates the life of greases in ball bearings, PFPEs outperformed hydrocarbons. At 10,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) and 177 °C (350 °F) most lubricants failed in less than 1,000 hours. *Krytox™ lubricant, a brand of PFPEs, lasted five times longer, with one grade performing for more than 25,000 hours—the equivalent of almost three years—without failing. In a side-by-side temperature test, hydrocarbon and PFPE (Krytox™ GPL 227) greases were placed in an oven at 232 °C (450 °F) for 40 hours. The hydrocarbon grease lost 40 percent of its weight (ceasing to be an effective lubricant) and developed tar. Krytox™, the PFPE grease, remained unchanged in weight, appearance and lubricating ability (see comparison above).
