A2L Refrigerants: Understanding the New Industry Standard

What Are A2L Refrigerants & Why Do We Need Them?

Ongoing regulatory requirements are driving the RAC industry towards lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants, many of which are flammable. However, recent innovation using hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) based refrigerant technology has led to the development of mildly flammable A2L refrigerants, such as the Opteon™ XL line of products. These refrigerants provide equipment manufacturers with reliable choices that can help minimize equipment redesign, by providing larger charge sizes and easier integration of electrical components than the higher flammability hydrocarbon refrigerants. For many applications, A2L refrigerants may provide the optimal balance of properties, when considering factors such as reliability, safety, sustainability, performance, efficiency, and total cost of ownership.
